Steven Blaney was born in Sherbrooke on April 8, 1965. He grew up in Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce and has been living in Lévis for over 15 years. Steven is married to Marie Bouchard and has two wonderful children, William-Antoine and Alexandra.
In his high school years, Steven Blaney attended Polyvalente Benoît-Vachon in Sainte-Marie and later boarded at Séminaire St-François in Cap-Rouge. He completed his junior college education at Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy in Cap-Rouge.
Steven was involved in environmental groups very early on, and in 1976 he became president of Sainte-Marie’s first 4-H Club. He also co-founded the Sainte-Marie chapter of Environnement Jeunesse (ENJEU) in 1978. He helped introduce the collection of recyclable paper and organized a number of local activities to educate people on the importance of conserving our resources.
Steven attended the co-op program at the Université de Sherbrooke and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1988. As president of the Association générale des étudiantes et des étudiants en génie, he participated in a bulk purchase of microcomputers and brought in Engineering Week. He was also a member of the university’s Vert & Or competitive swim team.
During his co-op terms in Montérégie, Steven earned a certificate in Management at McGill University. In 2002, he was part of the first cohort that graduated from the Executive MBA program at the Lévis campus of the Université du Québec.
Steven began his engineering career as a civil engineer at ENVIRAQUA in St-Hyacinthe, where he worked on a number of engineering projects related to wastewater treatment and urban infrastructure.
In 1993, he returned to the Quebec City region, where he later founded STRATECH, an environmental technology company that focuses on improving energy efficiency and has carried out many environmental projects for the province’s cities and industries.
In 1998, he and a group of agronomists founded ENVIRONGAIN, to address the environmental challenges facing the farming community. He designed a technology showcase on the treatment of swine manure at the Centre d’excellence en production porcine in SaintAnselme and participated in a project to promote organic fertilizer to farm producers.
In 2000, he became a consultant for Indian Affairs and supervised several infrastructure projects, including drinking water filtration plants and wastewater treatment and urban infrastructure for Aboriginal communities.
Throughout this time, Steven remained an active member of the largest group of environmental professionals in Canada, RÉSEAU Environnement. He also served as president of its Québec / Chaudière Appalaches chapter from 2003 to 2006 and organized various seminars.
On the political scene, Steven was Beauce-Nord’s first candidate for the Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) party in the 1993 provincial election. In 2004, he joined the Conservative Association of Lévis, contributing his enthusiasm and energy. He ran in the general election and won with an overwhelming majority on January 23, 2006, becoming Member of Parliament for the riding of Lévis-Bellechasse.
Soon after being elected, Steven Blaney became Vice-Chair of the Quebec Conservative Caucus and in October 2008, he became the President. He first served on the Indian Affairs Committee as well as the Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Committee. Steven later joined the Defence Committee to help deal with the important Afghan mission, and participated in a visit to Kandahar in January 2006.
On May 31, 2007, Steven Blaney became Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, which strives to promote linguistic duality throughout Canada. He is also Vice-Chair of the Canada-France Interparliamentary Association.
In January 2008, Steven Blaney promised to offset the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from his activities through tree planting, in cooperation with TREE CANADA and the Comité de restauration de la rivière Etchemin, thus becoming the first CARBON NEUTRAL MP.
True to his environmental commitment, Steven Blaney plans to position Lévis-Bellechasse as a leader in sustainable development. He is proud to represent such a diverse and vibrant riding and is passionately devoted to serving the people of Lévis, Bellechasse and Les Etchemins.
